The fonds consists of three excerpts from the parish registers of St. John's Anglican Cathedral, Winnipeg, kept by Rev. John West, Chaplain to the Hudson's Bay Company, photocopy, 1821-1823 (3 p.); and three items relating to Peguis (alias William King), the Saulteaux chief, photocopy, 1835, 1838, 1864 (3 p.).

Winnipeg District. Manitoba. Anglican Missions of Rupert's Land : The Anglican missions of Rupert's Land had their origins in the appointment of Rev. John West as Chaplain to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1820 and in his appeal for support, 1822, to the Church Missionary Society (see MG 17, B 2). In 1821, West established the first church in the wooden school-house built by the settlers of Lord Selkirk's Red River Settlement. St. John's, or the "Upper Church" as it was called, which became the Bishop of Rupert's Land's Cathedral in Winnipeg, was at Upper Fort Garry on the west bank of the Red River, about two miles from its confluence with the Assiniboine.

The missions next established were all futher down the Red River, north of St. John's, between Winnipeg and Selkirk. These included St. Paul's, also known as the "Middle Church", established in 1824; St. Andrew's-on-the-Red, also known as the "Lower Church", established in 1831; a mission specially for the Indian converts at the Indian Settlement at Sugar Point (later, St. Peter's Indian Reserve), now St. Peter's, Dynevor, established in 1836; and St. Clement's at Mapleton established in 1861.

General note:

Other copies of the registers of the Hudson's Bay Company Chaplains are found in the records held by the H.B.C. Archives in Winnipeg. Copies of these are available in MG 20 E 4 1-2, on reel HBC-4M5, to which access is restricted.
Photocopies in duplicate concerning the Red River settlement, received at some time prior to 1961, could have been before 1914, possibly from Mr. Sh[aw] of Winnipeg. Four pages dated 1821-1823, and 1838, are excerpts from the parish registers of St. John's, Winnipeg, while that for 1864 is from the parish registers of St. Peter's, Dynevor.

Originals with the Archives of the Anglican Diocese of Rupert's Land, Winnipeg, Man., The five registers are now in the possession of the Archives of the Anglican Diocese of Rupert's Land, Winnipeg, Man. The original 1835 certificate of annuity to Peguis, on buffalo hide, is in the Provincial Archives of Manitoba, Winnipeg.
