Fonds consists of cases brought forth before the Admiralty Court in 1601 dealing mainly with the seizure of French vessels concerned in the Newfoundland trade. Similarly, the fonds also consists of a French deposition regarding the seizure of French vessels, a proposal made by Charles Leigh for a voyage to Ramea in the Magdalen Islands for the purpose of fishing and for the establishment of a colony and also includes Richard Hakluyt's account of Stephen Bellanger's voyage to Cape Breton and Newfoundland in 1583. Caesar, Julius, Sir, 1558-1636 : Judge and writer on legal topics.

Sir Julius Caesar (1558-1636) was the eldest son of an Italian physician, Cesare Adelmare (d. 1569), who served as medical adviser both to Mary I and Elizabeth I. He became judge of the admiralty court in 1584. In 1588, he was admitted master of the chancery in ordinary and in the same year was returned to parliament for the first time as senior member for Reigate. Queen Elizabeth conferred on him the post of master of requests in 1591 and a grant of the reversion of the mastership of St. Catherine's Hospital, in which he installed himself in 1596 when it fell vacant.

He was knighted by James I in 1603. In 1606, he succeeded Sir George Hume as chancellor and under-treasurer of the exchequer, and on 5 July 1607 was sworn to the Privy Council. From 1614 to 1636, he held the office of Master of the Rolls. He died on 18 April 1636 and was buried in the church of Great St. Helen's. His third wife, Anne, was a niece of Sir Francis Bacon, Lord Verulam (1587-1657).

General note:

A small number of selections relevant to Canada have been copied by the National Archives of Canada. In 1915 the NA transcribed the excerpts from Add. MSS. 5664 (which was presented to the British Library, prior to 1831, by the Lord Chancellor, Alexander Wedderburn, 1st Baron Loughborough); in 1916 it transcribed those from Add. MSS. 11405 (acquired by the British Library in 1838) and Add. MSS. 12505 (acquired by the British Library in 1842). In 1920 another excerpt, from Add. MSS. 14027 (which was acquired by the British Library in 1843), was also transcribed.

Custodial history:

On the sale of the family estate at Bennington in 1744, Sir Julius Caesar's library was dispersed and a multitude of miscellaneous papers in his handwriting are now to be found scattered through the Lansdowne and Additional Manuscripts in the British Library.
