Fonds consists of returns of a census of Roman Catholics in the townships of Lochiel, Kenyon, Charlottenburg, and Lancaster, in Glengarry County, Upper Canada, June 1839, 50 pages; memorial, 26 April 1845, of the will of the Reverend John McDonald, relating to his bequest to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kingston of various pieces of land in Glengarry County, for the endowment of a Roman Catholic school in Alexandria, 3 pages; letter, 13 August 1852, from A. [W. Durrell] to the Very Reverend John McDonald, enclosing a copy of a statistical summary, received from Colonel Chisholm, of the census of Scottish clans and religious denominations in Glengarry County, 3 pages.

McDonald, John, 1782-1879 : The Very Reverend John McDonald, V.G. was born in Scotland, and emigrated with his parents to Glengarry County, Upper Canada, in 1786. He was educated at St. Andrew's, Ontario, and in 1802 attended the College of St. Sulpice, Montreal. In 1810 he entered the Seminary at Quebec and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest, 14 June 1814.

After receiving holy orders, he became a missionary in Glengarry, stationed at St. Raphael West, with responsibility for all the territory between Cedar Rapids and the mouth of the Niagara River. From about 1821 he was parish priest at Perth, Ontario, until 1837, when he returned to St. Raphael, where he remained as parish priest until December 1866. He was a vicar general of the Diocese of Kingston, and at the time of his death on 16 March 1879 was believed to be the oldest priest in Canada.
