Barr, Murray Llewellyn, 1908-1995 : Murray L. Barr, physician, anatomist and geneticist, was born in 1908 near Belmont, Ontario and was educated at the University of Western Ontario, where he received an M.D., 1933, and MSc., 1938. He began lecturing in the Department of Anatomy of the University of Western Ontario in 1936 and apart from a six-year period of service with the R.C.A.F. during World War II, remained at the same university throughout his career. He became Head of the Department of Microscopic Anatomy, 1953-1964, and Chairman of the Department of Anatomy, 1964-1967. In 1945 he began research in neuroanatomy, and over the following twenty-five years gained international recognition for his work on sex chromatin, chromosonal abnormalities and related questions. He retired in 1973, but continued lecturing on a part-time basis until 1979. Barr was made Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, 1958, and Fellow of the Royal Society (London), 1972, and received many other honours and awards.
