Osgood to James Coyne concerning Indian place names which appear in René de Bréhant de Galinée's journal.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Coyne, James H. (James Henry), 1849-1942 : James Henry Coyne, lawyer and historian, was born at St. Thomas, Ont., and took an active part in promoting and preserving Ontario's history. Educated at University College, University of Toronto, B.A., 1870, and M.A. 1905, he was called to the bar in 1874 and practised law in St. Thomas. In 1888, he was appointed Registrar of Deeds for Elgin County, and Master of Titles in 1892.
In 1891, he founded the Elgin Historical and Scientific Institute. He was involved in various historical associations including the Ontario Historical Society, president 1898-1902, and the Historical Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, 1918-1930. He also wrote a number of historical articles.
In 1903, he edited and translated into English a portion of René de Bréhant de Galinée's journal for the Ontario Historical Society's Papers and Proceedings (Vol. IV, 1903) under the title "Exploration of the Great Lake, 1669-1670". In 1922, he assisted in the erection of a monument in Port Dover, Ontario, commemorating the Dollier and Galinée Expedition of 1669-1670. Coyne's research was aided by information from Howard L. Osgood, a Rochester lawyer familiar with Galinée's journal.
