Fonds consists of a transcript of Councils held by Lieutenant Colonel William McKay at Drummond Island, Mich., with the Winibagas, Osaukies, and Autaugomies, 3 and 9 August 1817, and with the Ottawas, Chippewas and Winibagos, 7 July 1818, including speeches of Sauk Chief Black Hawk (1767-1838), Winibago Chief Shongapau, and Ottawa Chief Ocaita, and giving information on British relations with the Indians of the U.S.A. during and after the War of 1812. Also included is an office copy of general orders for the Indian Department concerning changes in the organization and personnel of the department, dated 13 April 1830.

McKay, William, 1772-1832 : Lieutenant-Colonel William McKay was the son of Loyalists Donald McKay and Elspeth Kennedy, brother of Alexander McKay (d. 1811) and brother-in-law of Simon Fraser (ca. 1760-1839). He was a partner in the North West Company until he retired from the fur trade in 1807. During the War of 1812 he commanded the British force which captured Prairie-du-Chien, and after the war he became an officer in the Indian Department. His son Robert became a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec.
