May, Walter William, fl. 1850 : Walter William May, naval officer, took part in the English expedition in search for Sir John Franklin. The Admiralty's new expedition following the return of a failed expedition by James Clark Ross involved two sailing vessels, the Resolute and the Assistance as well as two screw steamer, the Pioneer and the Intrepid and was led under the command of Sir Horatio Thomas Austin. May himself sailed on the Assistance with Captain Erasmus Ommanney. The fleet sailed on 3 May 1850 and Ommanney led the Assistance and the Intrepid into Wellington Channel on 23 August of that year and discovered the first traces of Franklin's expedition at Cape Riley and Beechey Island.
