Fonds consists of copies of the journals of Lefroy's expedition to Fort Good Hope with daily entries recording extensive personal observations and scientific data, 1843-1844. This material is located on microfilm reel M-2314. The fonds also contains correspondence.

Lefroy, John Henry, 1817-1890 : John Henry Lefroy was born and educated in Great Britain. Entering the army in 1834, he was selected by the British Government for special training in magnetic surveying techniques. He was posted to an observatory in Toronto in 1842 and the next year headed a magnetic survey expedition into Hudson's Bay Company territories. He was recalled to England in 1853 and after a distinguished military and civil service career, died in 1890.
