Peterborough County (Ont.) : Peterborough County lies to the north of Rice Lake in central Ontario, between the counties of Haliburton to the north and Northumberland to the south, with Hastings County on the east and the counties of Victoria and Durham on the west. The area, which was originally part of the Home District of Upper Canada, was surveyed in 1789. In 1802 it was transferred to the Newcastle District, in which it formed the northern riding of the county of Northumberland.

The first emigrants arrived from Cumberland in the north of England, ca. 1818, and settled mainly in the townships of Smith and Monaghan. Growth was slow at first, but in 1825 the British government assisted 415 impoverished families (about 1900 persons) to emigrate from Ireland under the direction of the Hon. Peter Robinson (1785-1838). He was an executive councillor of Upper Canada, in whose honour the county and city of Peterborough were named in 1826, at the suggestion of Frances Stewart.

Robinson's Irish immigrants settled mainly in the townships of Ennismore, Douro, Smith, Otonabee, and Asphodel. After this consolidation of population around the town of Peterborough, settlement gradually began to expand to the north. In 1838, the area was detached from Northumberland to become part of the new District of Colborne, with Peterborough as the district town. When the Colborne District was dissolved in 1849, the County of Peterborough was incorporated with the city of Peterborough as its county seat.

Custodial history:

The Public Archives of Canada prepared negative photostat copies in 1968 from originals held by Mr. J. Alexander Edmison, Q.C., of Ottawa, Ontario. Positive photostats were made at the same time, but these do not show the dates of the marriages clearly. The negative photostats were microfilmed in 1987.
