Fonds consists of personal diaries, recording part of James Bonar's years of service as Deputy Master of the Canadian Branch of the Royal Mint. The diaries, which cover in particular the war years, focus on the problems of securing a supply of bullion mainly from South Africa, and of the consequent minting problems, in meeting the reserve needs of the Canadian chartered banks and of the temporary Canadian Branch of the Bank of England. The prime difficulties involved the valuation of gold and other precious metals as a store of wealth and for reserve purposes, when Britain had suspended the gold standard from 1914 to 1925. The diary describing the post bellum period, deals with the settlement of accounts and the Royal Mint's role in servicing the needs of the chartered banks and the Bank of England.

Bonar, James, 1852-1941 : James Bonar, public servant, was born in 1852 at Perthshire, England and was educated at the Glasgow Academy and University, in Leipzig and Tubingen and at Balliol College, Oxford. Prior to entering the Civil Service, he was a lecturer in East London from 1877 until 1880. He was an examiner in the Civil Service Commission, 1881-1906, after which he became Deputy Master of the Canadian Branch of the Royal Mint, 1907-1919. He thereafter returned to England and was prominent in several learned societies. He was President of Section F of the British Association, 1898, Vice-President of the Royal Statistical Society, 1920, and Vice-President of the Royal Economic Society, 1930. He was the author of numerous works on political economy.
