Item is a journal of a trip from Quebec to Niagara written by Clarence Taylor, a midshipman in H.M.S. INCONSTANT, for his sister Emily, 9 May - 24 May 1838. Topics addressed by the author include the physical landscape of the journey and the cities, towns and settlements that he passes, with much attention given to Niagara Falls, the contemporary political climate in the Canadas and incidents of the Canadian Rebellion including the siege of the rebels on Navy Island. The future role of Britain in the Canadas is included as well as his unfavourable opinions on American manners, customs and values.

Inserted into volume one is a certificate testifying that the author passed behind the "Great Falling Sheet of Water" at Niagara.

Inserted in volume two is a folded map on parchment of the Niagara District, ca. 1838.
