Collection consists of letters written by Arthur Dillon to family members commenting on life in Upper Canada, 1836 and 1839. There are eight letters (5 complete, 3 extracts) which cover two separate journeys to Canada. The first six letters span the period 8 September 1836 to 18 January 1837. The last two letters are dated 14 January and 9 March 1839. Internal evidence suggests that other letters besides those included here were sent home to England as well.

The letters provide description of his travels around Upper Canada (Toronto, Niagara Falls, Lake Simcoe, London, Brantford, Kingston) and of a trip to Quebec City. There are observations on the lack of opportunities in England, the settlement process in Upper Canada, social and dining customs, the "Yankee" character of many recent arrivals, the political and religious makeup of the Upper Canadian legislature and the effects of the recent rebellions. The first few letters give notice of the author's intention to settle in Upper Canada. However, the last two letters give evidence of the author's change of plans and his decision to return to England.

Dillon, Arthur Edmund Denis Dillon-Lee, Viscount, 1812-1892 : Arthur Dillon was the third son of Henry Augustus Dillon-Lee, Viscount Dillon and Henrietta, daughter of Dominick Geoffrey Browne. He married Ellen, daughter of James Adderley in 1843 and he died at Ditchley, Enstone, Oxon, England on 12 January 1892.
