Fonds consists of letters written by Mrs. Basil Hall, a literate, educated, upper-class, British military wife, while travelling through Upper and Lower Canada as part of the Halls' North American tour of 1827-1828. The letters are written in journal format, are addressed to "my dearest Jane" in the period 2 July to 14 September 1827, and describe in some detail the surroundings through which Mrs. Hall passed as well as her experiences. The letters provide a woman's view of Canadian society in the early years of the nineteen century and trace her travels by land and water through a variety of communities including Niagara Falls, St. Catherine's, York, Lake Simcoe, Newmarket, Kingston, Montreal and Quebec City.

Hall, Margaret, fl. 1800-1876 : Margaret Hall (d. 1876) of Edinburgh, daughter of Sir John Hunter, British consul-general in Spain, married Captain Basil Hall (retired Royal British Navy, and travel and scientific writer), in 1825. They had two daughters and one son including Eliza Hall and Basil Sidmouth de Ros Hall. Margaret Hall travelled through the Canadas and the United States of America between 1827 and 1828 with her husband and daughter. She was widowed in 1844 and died in 1876.
