3 buttons.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of the following series of textual records: Correspondence, 1940-1964; National Liberal Federation, 1909-1974; Cockfield Brown & Company Ltd., 1935-1957; Reference files, 1906-1962; National Arts Centre, 1962-1968; and an additional 20 cm of material containing reference files as well as material relating to the National Liberal federation and Cockfield & Brown Corporation.
The fonds contains photographs documenting activities of the Liberal Party in the 1940's and 1950's, primarily in Ontario; W.L.M. King; a 1958 convention; cabinet ministers, 1944-1945. The fonds also contains a photograph of George Drew, Lester B. Pearson and some photographs showing traditional bread baking.
Included in the fonds are sound recordings of radio broadcasts, talks, and speeches of prominent Canadian political leaders; as well as news broadcasts, 1956-1962. Included also is a recording of a live broadcast by radio station CJCH in Halifax of an election debate held during the 1958 federal election campaign among the Liberal and Conservative candidates for the riding of Halifax, 1958.
The fonds also contains political cartoons by Robert Chambers, 1957-1959 and Les Callan, 1953; and a political cartoon by Johnston entitled, "He's not half the man his father was", referring to an unknown figure, 1981.
Included in horizontal storage are three posters issued by the Wartime Information Board, containers 29 to 31.
Fonds also consists of 3 William Lyon Mackenzie King lapel buttons, 4 National Liberal Federation of Canada Advisory Council name tags, 2 National Liberal Convention name tags, and 1 Ontario Liberal Association name tag.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Kidd, Henry Erskine, 1902- : Henry William Erskine Kidd, born in 1902 at Stockholm, Sweden, of British parents was educated in Sweden and immigrated to Canada in 1921. Prior to entering the public relations and advertising field, Henry Kidd worked as a reporter for the Vancouver Daily World, 1923-1925, and as editor of a number of automobile trade journals. From 1926 to 1930 he worked for Eastman Advertising Agency and from 1930 to 1963 he worked for Cockfield Brown in Vancouver and after 1937, in Montreal. It was while with Cockfield Brown that Henry Kidd, with the company's approval, assumed a major role with the Liberal Federation.
In 1943 Kidd was appointed Liberal publicity director for the 1945 general election. Subsequently he was responsible for all Liberal Federation election activities up to and including the 1958 general election. In 1948 Kidd was appointed General Secretary of the National Liberal Convention. From 1949 to 1959 he was General Secretary of the National Liberal Federation. From 1959 to 1962, he worked on special projects for the National Liberal Federation. He became vice-president and director of Cockfield, Brown & Company Limited.
