Houston, Robert Laird, 1911-2002 : Robert Laird Houston, trade consultant, was born in Melville, Sask., and was raised in the Ottawa Valley. In 1934, he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, N.Y.; he attended Clarkson on a hockey scholarship. Col. Houston is also a graduate from the British Army Staff College, the United States Armed Forces Staff College and the National Defence College of Canada.

He served in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals from 1935 until his retirement with the rank of Colonel in 1963. Some of the positions he held includes Director of Operations and Plans for the Canadian Army, co-ordinator for the planning of Canada's tri-service participation in the United Nations Emergency Force, and Deputy Military Advisor to the International Control Commission in Vietnam. He has also served on the United States - Canada Permanent Joint Board of Defence and was Chairman of the Planning Sub-Committee of that body.

After retiring from the army, Col. Houston joined the Canada-Japan Trade Council as Executive-Secretary and became its President in 1967. Robert Houston is past chairperson of the Canadian National Committee of United World Colleges, past patron of the Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, past honourary secretary-treasurer of the Atlantic College Committee and past chairperson of the national fund-raising committee fro the Rt. Hon. John G. Diefenbaker Centre.

Colonel Houston died at Ottawa on 6 March 2002.
