50 photographs b&w.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of research materials including correspondence, notes, clippings and leaflets assembled by Herbert Legg in the writing of his book, Customs service in Western Canada 1867-1925, 1913-1970; photographic copies of a writ of assistance for Customs Officer William Cox Allen, 21 December 1898, and a "Let Pass" for Colin Sinclair to bring settlers' effects past Fort Steel, 25 March 1901.
Fonds also consists of photographs of Churchill, Manitoba; various customs houses in British Columbia; and group pictures of Customs and Excise personnel at Calgary, Alberta, 1925 and at Rykerts, B.C., 1970.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Legg, Herbert, b. 1891 : Herbert Legg entered the Canadian Customs Department as a stenographer in 1913 and retired in 1956 as Collector of Customs for Calgary. From 1924 to 1949, while he was District Inspector of Customs at Calgary, he supervised all the customs officers in the prairie provinces, eastern British Columbia and the Yukon. He published the book Customs Services in Western Canada 1867-1925 in 1962.Additional information:General note:Received in 1973 from Herbert Legg of Creston, B.C.
