Fonds consists of papers, n.d., 1931-1984, concerned with Malcolm M. Thomson's writing of the history of timekeeping in Canada and his career with the Dominion observatory and the National Research Council. These include the unedited manuscript of "The Beginning of the Long Dash", research files on timekeeping, reference files, work diaries.

Fonds also contains a photograph, 1939, that is a group portrait of the staff of the Dominion Observatory and of the Geodetic Survey of Canada, 28 November 1939, Ottawa, Ontario.

Thomson, Malcolm M., 1908-2002 : Malcolm M. Thomson, astronomer, public servant, born in Nelson, B.C., was educated at John's College in Winnipeg, 1929, and Yale University, 1954. Thomson joined the Positional Astronomy Division of the Dominion Observatory, Ottawa, in May 1930, and became head of the division in 1957. In 1970, with the transfer of the Dominion Observatory to the National Research Council, Thomson assumed charge of the Time and Frequency section of the Applied Physics Division, where he remained until his retirement in December 1972. He was national president of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, 1966-1968.

In his retirement, he wrote a history of timekeeping in Canada, published in 1978 as The Beginning of the Long Dash: A History of Timekeeping in Canada.
