He was the art editor and illustrator of the Canadian Forum from 1923 to 1932 and he has illustrated numerous books including Marie Chapdelaine by Louis Hémon and In the Village of Viger by Duncan Campbell Scott. Thoreau MacDonald, who is the son of J.E.H. MacDonald, was a friend of various members of the Group of Seven, particularly A.Y. Jackson. Due to colour blindness, much of MacDonald's work is in black and white.
