Fonds consists of papers which reflect Newton Wesley Rowell's political and public life, as well as his personal life. Included are: correspondence, 1902-1938; speeches, n.d., 1912-1935; memoranda and notes, n.d.; reference, 1896-1939; family papers and personal correspondence, 1824-1881, 1887-1942; biographer's collection, 1900-[197-?]; photocopy, 1950, 6 pages; and transcript 1917-1920, 17 pages.

Rowell, Newton W. (Newton Wesley), 1867-1941 : Newton Wesley Rowell, born in Middlesex County, Ont., received his education from public schools and the Ontario Law Society. He was admitted to the bar of Ontario in 1891, became a K.C. in 1902, and a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1911. Rowell was first elected in 1911 as member of the Ontario Legislative Assembly for North Oxford. From 1911 to 1917 he was the Liberal House leader.

In 1917 he was elected as member of Parliament representing Durham County; he resigned in 1921. As a member of the Union Government, he was president of the Privy Council, 1917-1920, minister of health, 1919-1920, and a member of the Imperial War Cabinet, 1918. In addition, he represented Canada at the International Labour Conference, 1919, and the League of Nations, 1920. Rowell served as chief justice of Ontario, 1936-1938, and chairman of the Royal Commission on Dominion-Provincial Relations, 1937-1938, resigning due to ill health. General note:

Most of the papers were received in 1951 from his widow. Most of the personal and family papers, volume 89, were received in 1977 from his daughter, Mrs. H.R. Jackman. Biographer Margaret Prang donated a collection of papers in 2007.
