Sifton, Arthur Lewis, 1859-1921 : The Rt. Hon. A.L. Sifton, politician and lawyer, was born in Canada West, and educated at Victoria College, Cobourg. He was called to the Manitoba bar in 1883 and practised law in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. He was admitted to the Northwest Territories bar in 1885, and was elected to the Assembly, 1899, serving as Treasurer and Commissioner for Public Works, 1901. In 1903, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Northwest Territories, and became Chief Justice of Alberta, 1905-1910.

After entering provincial politics Sifton became Premier, Provincial Treasurer and Minister of Public Works of Alberta in 1910, and in 1912 he assumed the additional portfolio of Railways and Telephones. On entering the federal Union Government in 1917 he served as Minister of Customs, 1917-1918, Customs and Inland Revenue, 1918-1919, Public Works, 1919, and as Secretary of State, 1919-1921. As part of the Canadian delegation, Sifton attended the Paris Peace Conference of 1919-1919 and sat on a number of international commissions. In 1920 he became first chairman of the Canadian Air Board.

Received in 1964 from his daughter, Mrs. W.R. Kenny. The Steele correspondence, volume 14, was received in 1967 from Charles MacKenzie of Ottawa, Ont.; additional material was received in 1972 from Mrs. Kenney's estate through Mary Sifton. Volume 13 was received in 1966 from Mrs. A.C. Ernst of Ottawa, Ont.
