Included are: certificates, statements of service and correspondence relating to Evans' wartime merchant naval service and his later struggle to obtain a pension for a medical disability due to an injury sustained when the S.S. Einvik was torpedoed, 1941-1978; post-war employment records and correspondence relating to his service with the Newfoundland and Canadian Customs Service and the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve, 1948-1975; an annotated manuscript, "Through the Corridors of Hell", relating to Evans' experiences in the merchant navy during the war, with correspondence and research notes, these latter including wartime convoy reports and naval messages, n.d., 1941-1944 and 1977-1980; and miscellaneous clippings and awards, n.d., 1969-1993.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Evans, George Harold, 1926- : George Harold Evans was born at St. John's, Newfoundland on 17 March 1926. In 1941, he joined the merchant navy. He first served as a cabin boy on the Norwegian ship S.S. Einvik which was torpedoed off the southeast coast of Iceland in September 1941. Following a brief period of hospitalization after his rescue, Evans returned to duty serving in the Atlantic, the English Channel, the Russian convoys, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean, until 1945. Later, from 1953 to 1958, Evans served with the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve. Evans entered the Customs Service at Corner Brook, Newfoundland in 1948 and shortly thereafter transferred to Nova Scotia.
