Davies, John W., 1899-1978 : "Jack" Davies, sports executive, was born to British parents in Paris, and arrived in Canada in 1920. Engaged in engineering work, a profession which he followed until 1965, Davies was also involved throughout his life with the military, assisting in the establishment of the Engineer Training School during the Second World War and later serving as national president of the Military Engineers Association of Canada and Honorary Colonel of the 3rd Field Engineer Regiment.

An avid athlete, Davies rose to national prominence through involvement in amateur sport. As president of the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada from 1953 until his death, Davies was instrumental in the organization of Canadian teams competing in the Commonwealth meets. He played a prominent role, as well, in the Commonwealth Games Federation, Canadian Olympic Association, Amateur Athletic Union of Canada, International Amateur Athletic Federation, and in the organization of a number of international sporting events.

Among his numerous positions held in Canadian and international sport, Davies was appointed Honorary Life President of the Canadian Track and Field Association, and Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Olympic Association, the British Olympic Association, and the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States. His many awards have included the Coronation Medal (1953), the Veterans I.A.A.F. pin (1964), the Centennial Medal (1967), and the Service Medal of the Order of Canada (1971).
