Markham, Violet R. (Violet Rosa), 1872-1959 : Violet Markham, daughter of a wealthy Derbyshire family, first met Mackenzie King in 1905 during a visit to Canada. Drawn together by a common interest in labour problems and social welfare, this was the beginning of a close friendship which lasted until King's death in 1950. Active in British public life until her death in 1959, Violet Markham was also the author of several books, including her autobiography Return Passage, 1953.
