Fonds consists of records of the South African War including letters written by Leckie to relatives in Canada dealing with battles in the Transvaal involving the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles, photocopy, 1901-1902, 0.02 m; First World War material including correspondence relating to the enlistment and embarcation of troops, to trench warfare, to general military matters and to the Battle of Langemarck. Also includes general orders, reports and lists, originals, 1914-1919, 0.05 m, and photocopy, 1914-1915, 0.02 m.

Photographic material depicts activities of the 72nd Regiment (seaforth Highlanders of Canada), Vancouver and Nanaimo, British Columbia, 1911-1913; personnel and activities of the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish), C.E.F., in England and France, ca. 1914-1916; and one group photograph by Lambert Weston & Son, Folkestone.

Leckie, Robert Gilmour Edwards, 1869-1923 : Robert Gilmour Edward Leckie, military officer and civil engineer, was born in 1869 at Halifax, N.S., and was educated at Bishop's College School in Lennoxville, Que., the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ont., and King's College in Windsor, N.S., B.Sc. 1895. For several years he practised civil engineering, first in the Maritimes and after 1898 in British Columbia. He entered the Canadian Militia in 1890. A surveyor and developer, he was a lieutenant in the 75th Regiment in 1890, a captain in 1892 and a major in 1895. He then transferred to the 8th Princess Louise's New Bruswick Hussars.

During the South African War, he had command of "A" Squardon, 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles. Afterwards he was Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 72nd Regiment (Seaforth Highlanders of Canada).

During the First World War, he served in France as Commanding Officer of the 16th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (The Canadian Scottish). After being invalided in 1915, he rose to the rank of Major-General and was appointed General Officer Commanding, British Columbia and Yukon Military District.
