Fonds consists of documents related to the activities of Albert Edgar Ritchie as diplomat and senior civil servant with the Canadian Department of External Affairs. Documents relative to the activities of Norman A. Robertson and Hume H. Wrong are also found in the A.E. Ritchie papers. The fonds includes the following series: Assistant Under-Secretary and Deputy-Secretary of State for External Affairs, Ambassador to the United States of America, Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs, Personal correspondence, Personal files and the Hume W. Wrong personal files, n.d., 1816-1982.

The fonds contains photographs showing events and individuals associated with Ritchie's career as a member of the department of External Affairs, particularly as Assistant Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs 1959-1964, Deputy Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs 1964-1966, Ambassador to the United States 1966-1969, Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs 1970-1976, and Ambassador to Ireland 1976-1982.

The fonds also contains a sound recording of a telephone conversation between Canadian and American officials regarding ongoing negotiations for a continental energy policy, 1971. A transcript of this recording can be found in Vol. 13.

Ritchie, Albert Edgar, 1916-2002 : Albert Edgar Ritchie was born in Andover, New Brunswick on 20 December 1916 and was educated at Mount Allison University (1934-1938) and as a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University (1938-1940) where he specialized in economics. He began his career in the public service with the British Purchasing Commission (l941-1942) and with the Ministry of Economic Welfare Mission at the British Embassy in Washington (1942-1944).

He joined the Canadian Department of External Affairs in 1944 as 3rd Secretary in Washington and was promoted to 2nd Secretary in 1946. He resigned in the same year to work in the United Nations where he served in the positions of Special Assistant to Assistant Secretary-General of Economic Affairs (1946-1947) and Special Assistant to the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Preparation Committee and Conference on Trade and Employment (1947-1948).

He rejoined the Department of External Affairs in 1948 becoming a Foreign Service Officer and lst Secretary in London. He became a Counsellor in 1952 and then served in a number of positions in Ottawa and Washington (1952-1957) and was Chargé d'affaires in Washington (1958-1959). From 1959 to 1974, Mr. Ritchie held senior positions within the Department of External Affairs: Assistant Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs (1959-1964), Deputy Under-Secretary (1964-1966), Ambassador to the United States (1966-1969), Under-Secretary (1970-1974). His final appointment was as Ambassador to Ireland (1976-1980). Mr. Ritchie received the Outstanding Achievement Award of the Public Service of Canada in 1974 and became a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1975. He died on 24 January 2002.
