Fonds consists of textual records in the following series: correspondence; book reviews, articles and interviews; manuscripts, reports and speeches.

Fonds also contains photographic materials. Copy negatives of two photographs, depict the mounting of guard by Royal 22nd Regiment, Buckingham Palace, 1940; view of Canadian Corps Headquarters, Leatherhead, Surrey, ca. 1941. Four photographs, September 1968, by Dennis Mickler, depict a reception launching the first volume of John Swettenham's biography "McNaughton." Copy negative of a photograph, n.d., that is a portrait of Major-General James H. Elmsley, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O..

Swettenham, John Alexander, 1920-1980 : John Swettenham, public servant, historian, was born and educated in England, and served in World War II with the Royal Engineers. Immigrating to Canada in 1952, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1954 and in 1958 was seconded to the Army Historical Section where he served until his retirement from the Army in 1966. In 1969, he became senior military historian at the Canadian War Museum.

He is the author of The Tragedy of the Baltic States 1952, To Seize the Victory: the Canadian Corps in World War I 1965, Allied Intervention in Russia, 1918-1919, and the Part Played by Canada 1967, McNaughton 1968-1969 and Canada and the First World War 1969.

General note:

Textual records: Received in 1980 from Mrs. Ellinor Swettenham of Ottawa, Ont. At least some of these materials were acquired from Mrs. Ellinor Swettenham through the War Museum which may have retained some artifacts.

Related material:

The James Leslie and family fonds, MG 24 D 102, and parts of the Andrew George Latta McNaughton collection, MG 30 E 133, were acquired from Ellinor Swettenham, widow of John Swettenham, who had acquired these materials from the McNaughton family on the understanding that they would eventually be donated to the Public Archives. The McNaughton collection includes sound recordings of interviews with A.G.L. McNaughton, by John Swettenham.
