Fonds consists of papers relating to Parkinson's working career as an Economic Advisor for the Department of External Affairs, the Wartime Prices and Trade Board and the Department of Finance and as Director of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Photographic material documents various aspects of Joseph Frederick Parkinson: his participation in the International Monetary Fund Board; Canadian delegation in Santiago and Portillo (Chile), and Singapore; reception for the Hungarian Ambassador at the National Arts Centre; group portrait of some founders of the League for Social Reconstruction; and of Salisbury, Rhodesia.

Parkinson, Joseph Frederick, 1904-1990 : Joseph F. Parkinson (1904-1990), public servant, was a graduate of the London School of Economics and the University of London. He joined the teaching staff of the Department of Economics and Political Science, University of Toronto, in 1929. He was an early and active member of the Canadian Institute on Economics and Politics, forerunner of the Couchiching Conference, as well as the League for Social Reconstruction. He attended the founding convention of the C.C.F. at Regina in 1933.

Parkinson began his public service career by serving on the Joint Canada-U.S. Economic Committees, Department of External Affairs, 1939-1942. In 1942 he joined the staff of Wartime Prices and Trade Board as Economic Advisor in the Research Division. From 1946 to 1951 he served as Alternate Canadian Director of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, from 1951 to 1952 in Paris with the C.E.E.D. and N.A.T.O., and as financial counselor at Canada House in London, 1952-1953. In 1954 he joined the Department of Finance, serving as Director of the Economic Policy Division and as Economic Advisor to the Deputy Minister until his retirement in 1969. During the 1970's Mr. Parkinson worked as a Consultant Expert for economic organizations in Canada and outside Canada (Commonwealth, Caricom, South Africa and Europe). He also taught various courses at the Institute of International Co-operation of the University of Ottawa. RG19 General Inventory
