Hudson's Bay Company : The North West Company developed from the large numbers of independent traders trading into the North West after the British conquest of New France. By 1775, certain traders had formed a loose alliance, many of whose members eventually composed the North West Company. Between then and 1779, the North West Company was formally organized, the most prominent concerns in the company being Benjamin and Joseph Frobisher and McTavish and Co. After a reorganization in 1783, the company presented a strong challenge to the Hudson's Bay Company, penetrating into previously unexploited regions of the far North West.

Several other companies sought to compete with the Nor'Westers including Gregory, McLeod and Company, which was absorbed in 1787, and the XY or New North West Company in 1798. The most prominent concerns in the XY Company were Forsyth, Richardson and Company, and Sir Alexander Mackenzie and Company. This latter concern was absorbed by the Nor'Westers in 1804.

The Hudson's Bay Company responded to the challenge of the Nor'Westers by building Cumberland House in 1744, its first truly inland post. By 1811, bitter competition intensified when the Earl of Selkirk obtained a controlling interest in the Hudson's Bay Company main route to the Athabaska region. The resulting struggle for supremacy culminated when the North West and Hudson's Bay companies united under the name Hudson's Bay Company in 1821.
