Hudson's Bay Company : The Hudson's Bay Company was the subject of two major parliamentary inquiries. The first in 1749 was initiated following charges made by Arthur Dobbs, M.P., that the company had forfeited its charter by, among other things, refusing to explore for a North West Passage. After an extensive investigation into most aspects of the company's operations, the committee approved the company's conduct. The report was submitted to the House of Commons where it provided the grounds for defeating a motion to put the company's exclusive trade rights to the test of law.

The second parliamentary committee in 1857 was appointed to discuss the possible renewal of the company's licence for exclusive trade. The inquiry again studied most aspects of the company's trade and interests. Although the committee vindicated the company's trading methods and mode of operation, it recommended that Vancouver Island and the mainland opposite be granted Crown Colony status and that arrangements should be considered for transferring Red River territory to Canada.
