Colin Robertson first served the North West Company as a clerk in the English River District prior to 1804. In 1809, he left the North West Company, and travelled to England where he approached the Governor and Committee of the Hudson's Bay Company with a plan of assault on the North West Company's position in the Athabasca District. The scheme, rejected in 1810, was fully approved four years later. Robertson was appointed to supervise the campaign. His former colleagues arrested and held him prisoner during the winter of 1818-1819. After his escape he returned to London where he witnessed negotiations preceding the union of the two companies.
In 1821, he was appointed Chief Factor of Norway House. He later served at Fort Churchill, 1824, Island Lake, 1826, and Swan River, 1830, and after a leave of absence, 1832-1837, he was placed in charge of the New Brunswick District, 1837-1839. He retired from the company's service in 1840. He was later elected as the representative for the Lake of the Two Mountains District in the Legislative Assembly of United Canada in 1841.Additional information:Location of originals note:Originals with the Hudson's Bay Company Archives, Winnipeg, Man.Subject heading:- Colonie de la rivière Rouge
