This first segment of a program in the CBC Tuesday Night series features a documentary on the Stratford Festival. An extended inteview with Tom Patterson, the man who conceived the idea of the festival and its present Director of Public Relations, is interspersed with comments and reminiscences as follows: James Bannerman introduces the programs. There is an excerpt of a 1953 interview of Tom Patterson in which he talks of his hopes for the future of the theatre. Sir Tyrone Guthrie explains how he came to be involved with the project. Sir Alec Guinness discusses acting Shakespeare in general and at Stratford. Cecil Clark talks about the difficulty of finding staff to make costumes, properties, etc. ad on building a Canadian theatre industry. John Hayes talks about the early days of Stratford when the productions were played in a tent. Louis Applebaum, the former music director comments on the musicians who worked there. SUCH SWEET THUNDER, written by Duke Ellington and dedicated to Stratford, is played. William Hutt reminiscens about the opening night in 1953. Amelia Hall talks about the first opening night in 1953. There are excerpts of interviews of Sir Ernest MacMillan; Lotta Dempsey of the Globe and Mail; Robertson Davies, editor of the Peterborough Examiner; and Walter Kerr of the New York Herald Tribune: which took place on the 1953 opening night of Richard III. Frances Hyland talks about working with Michael Langham. Unidentified people discuss the locals' reaction to having a famous theatre in their midst. Arnold Edinborough, editor of Saturday Night, describes Stratford as an exciting summer carnival, compares the work of Guthrie and Langham, and describes the quality of productions. Glenn Gould comments on the music festivals. Eric McLean of the Montreal Star comments on the music festivals and discusses Louis Applebaum. Jean Gascon, the executive artistic director, discusses the festival and the work he does. Zoe Caldwell talks about~being a part of Stratford.
