Hudson's Bay Company : James Isham (ca. 1716-1761) began his career with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1732 at York Fort, in 1737 he became Chief Factor of York and in 1741 he was placed in charge of Fort Churchill. Isham had arrived in the Northwest at about the time Captain Christopher Middleton was searching for the Northwest Passage; and because of this, Isham was recalled in 1745 to answer the company's questions concerning Middleton's voyage and later testified before the Parliamentary Inquiry of 1749. In 1750 Isham was called to active service as Chief Factor of York and remained at York until his death in 1761.

Andrew Graham (ca. 1733-1815) began his career with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1749 at Prince of Wales Fort. He served in several capacities including "Assistant Writer" at York under James Isham, and bookkeeper and second-in-command. In 1761, he took command of Severn House and supervised the completion of its construction. When Governor Jacobs left for London in 1765-1766, Graham assumed temporary command.

In 1769 Graham presented some of his "Observations" to the Governor and Committee in London. In 1770, he returned to the Bay, and continued to write his "Observations" which were sent to the Royal Society and since lost. As Acting Chief Factor of York in 1771-1772, he supervised several expeditions into the interior and subsequently of an inland post on the Saskatchewan River. Graham left Hudson Bay for London in 1775 and presented the company with another copy of his "Observations". He retired near Edinburgh where he acted as an agent and consultant of the company.
