Hudson's Bay Company : Governor-in-Chief, Hudson's Bay Company

Alexander Grant Dallas was engaged in the China trade with the firm of Jardine, Matheson and Co. Ltd. until 1854.

He later re-entered business life with the Hudson's Bay Company as Chief Factor of Victoria. In 1862, he was appointed Simpson's successor as Governor-in-Chief. Dallas soon became involved in the developing controversy surrounding the Red River settlement. Favouring direct administration by Britain as the only means of fostering a successful settlement, he began negotiations with the Colonial Office and the Canadian Government which were subsequently abandoned. In 1863, working in close consultation with Edward Watkin, he helped plan the reorganization of the company after it was purchased by International Financial Society. He retired in 1864.
