Fitzgerald, C.W. Jefferys, Arthur Lismer, Frank Johnston and A.Y. Jackson; copies of six letters from Lawren Harris and four letters to various recipients from MacDonald; miscellaneous material relating to A.Y. Jackson; notebooks and diaries; poetry manuscripts; lectures and notes; other manuscripts; and miscellaneous material.
Fonds also consists of drawings by J.E.H. MacDonald.
Photographic material includes various portraits of J.E.H. MacDonald alone or with others; other photographs depict two murals done for a restaurant in or near Bedford, Nova Scotia. Arthur Lismer is likely the artist of the murals.Biography/Administrative history:Macdonald, J. E. H. (James Edward Hervey), 1873-1932 : James Edward Hervey MacDonald, artist, was one of the original members of the Group of Seven. He was trained at the Hamilton Art School 1887-1889 and worked as a commercial artist between 1889 and 1911. From 1921 until his death he taught at the Ontario College of Art, Toronto, where he was Principal during his last four years. In 1923, he was art editor of Canadian Forum. Throughout his life, he made numerous painting trips to the Algonquin and Algoma districts of Ontario, to Nova Scotia, the Rockies and the West Indies. MacDonald was also a poet. He published four volumes of poetry, Village and fields (1933), My high horse (ca. 1933), West by east (1933) and A word to us all (1945), as well as contributing to various publications.Additional information:General note:Textual material was received between 1970 and 1974 from J.E.H. MacDonald's son, Thoreau MacDonald of Thornhill, Ontario (the correspondence from A.Y. Jackson and related material coming from Thoreau MacDonald through Dr. Naomi Jackson Groves of Ottawa). The MacDonald letter to Gladys Montgomery was acquired from D. & J. Ritchie, Toronto, in 1992.
