The importance of the Chinese consulate as an integral part of the Chinese Canadian community is illustrated in this collection. Before the establishment of full diplomatic ties with China in 1942 the consul fulfilled many diplomatic functions. The most important subjects dealt with in this collection include registration certificates (Chinese Immigration Act 1923), war relief to China, and Sino-Canadian relations. There are registration certificates for more than a thousand individuals and families in the collection. A large number of these certificates are for Chinese Canadians residing in the Prairie provinces. On the other hand most of the correspondence concerning wartime relief to China is from British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. The collection is in both English and Chinese.

China. Consulate (Canada) : The first Chinese consulate in Canada was opened in 1909. Between 1909 and 1970 there were Chinese consulates for varying periods of time in Ottawa, Vancouver, Toronto, and Winnipeg. In 1970 the Republic of China (Taiwan) withdrew its diplomatic and consular officials from Canada.
