Fonds consists of four letters written by Penny to members of his family, 1874-1879, 31 pages; miscellaneous material including birth certificate transcribed in 1837, letters patent appointment to the Senate, 1874, clipping from the Herald about nomination to the Senate, 1874, address accompanying a gold medal awarded to Penny for his services as Canadian Commissioner at the Philadelphia International Exhibition of 1874, and baptismal certificate of son, 1882, 5 pages. The fonds also contains one Dominion of Canada medal as well as two copper facsimilies of it and one plaque awarded to Hon. E. G. Penny at the Philadelphia International Exhibition (1876).

Penny, Edward Goff, 1820-1881 : Edward Goff Penny, born in London, was educated in England. He came to Canada in 1842 and was called to the bar of Lower Canada in 1850. Penny was proprietor and chief political writer of the Montreal Herald, a Liberal and an opponent of Confederation. He was a member of the Senate, 1874-1881.
