The fonds consists of papers, photographs, and prints of William Lawson Grant and his wife Maude Grant (nee Parkin). The textual records include William L. Grant's correspondence, subject files, and notebooks; and Maude Grant's correspondence, subject files, and miscellaneous papers. The photographs document the life, work, family, and friends of the Grants, including members of the Parkin and Lawson families, while the prints primarily depict historical figures although one is a German war poster dating from 1918. The fonds also contains postal covers received by W. L. Grant from various correspondents.

Grant, William Lawson, 1872-1935 : William Lawson Grant was born 2 November 1872 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, the son of George Monro Grant, Principal of Queen's University, and Jessie Lawson. Grant studied at Queen's University and at Balliol College, Oxford, receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Oxford in 1898. He then embarked on a career in education, teaching at Upper Canada College and St. Andrew's College in Toronto from 1898 to 1904. He taught colonial history at Oxford (1906-1910) and Queen's University (1910-1915). During the First World War, he served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force overseas in France where he was wounded in 1916.

Grant became headmaster of Upper Canada College in 1917, and remained in this position until his death on 3 February 1935 in Toronto. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1911. He wrote or edited several historical works, including a biography of his father, "Principal Grant" (1904); "The Voyages of Samuel de Champlain" (1907); Lescarbot's "History of New France" (1907-1914); "Canadian Constitutional Development" (1908); "Acts of the Privy Council, Colonial Series" (1907-1910); "The Ontario High School History of Canada" (1914); and "The Tribune of Nova Scotia: A Chronicle of Joseph Howe" (1915).

Grant married Maude Erskine Parkin on 1 June 1911, and they had three daughters and one son: Margaret Monro Grant, Charity Lawson Grant, Jessie Alison Grant, and George Parkin Grant.

Grant, Maude, 1880-1963 : Maude Erskine Parkin was born 14 September 1880 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, the daughter of educator George Robert Parkin and his wife Annie Connell Fisher. She married William Lawson Grant on 1 June 1911, and they had three daughters and one son: Margaret Monro Grant (b. 1912), Charity Lawson Grant (b. 1913), and Jessie Alison Grant (b. 1916), and George Parkin Grant (b. 1918).

Maude Grant was warden of Asburne Hall, Victoria College, McGill University, from 1937 to 1940, and throughout her life she was associated with many educational and social welfare organizations. She died on 1 February 1963.

Custodial history:

Parts of the fonds were received at various times from different family members. There were donations of textual records from Maude Grant in 1960; from G. Raleigh Parkin in 1964; from Mrs. Geoffrey Andrew of Ottawa in 1967 (volumes 12-16); and from Miss Charity L. Grant of Toronto in 1977.
