Hales, Alfred Dryden, 1909- : Alfred Dryden Hales, born in 1909 at Guelph, Ont. He attended both public and post-secondary educational institutions in Guelph, and graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College in 1934 with a Bachelor of Scientific Agriculture. Upon his graduation, he worked in the industry, first Swift Canadian Company, and later as an independent merchant.

He was active in civic politics and community affairs, serving as Director of the Y.M.C.A., 1938, President of the Chamber of Commerce, 1940, Vice-Chairman of the Guelph Transportation Commission, 1948, and from 1956 to 1957, as an Alderman of the City of Guelph. During the Second World War, Hales held the rank of Sub-Lieutenant in the Canadian Naval Reserve.

He was a Member of Parliament, representing Wellington-South from 1957 until his retirement in 1974. He served as Parliament Secretary to the Minister of Labour, 1962-1963, Chairman of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Accounts, 1967-1968, and sat as a member of the Standing Committee on the Parliamentary Restaurant, and the Standing Committee on Industry, Trade and Commerce.
