The item consists of three manuscript notebooks containing two transcribed plays, namely Marie Ducange by English playwright Bayle Bernard and popular comedy Gretna Green with some stage directions. All three notebooks bear Peter Richings' name.

Richings, Peter, 1798-1871 : Actor opera singer manager

Peter Richings was born in England but immigrated in 1821 to the United States, where he appeared on various New York stages. In 1840 he was stage manager of the Walnut St. and Chestnut St. theatres in Philadelphia, but he returned to New York in 1858. During the 1860s he was manager of an English opera company which toured for several seasons with his adopted daughter, Caroline Richings, in soprano roles. After his daughter's marriage to Pierre Bernard in 1867, Richings retired from the theatre.
