YIVO Institute For Jewish Research : The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research was originally established in Vilna (Vilnius) in 1925 as a centre for the study of East European Jewry, its language and its culture. Support branches for the Institute were later opened in New York, Palestine, South Africa and Buenos Aires with its headquarters eventually moving to New York in 1940 due to the outbreak of the Second World War. Much of the YIVO collection was diffused to German locations during the war, however, much of it was able to be recovered and transferred to the New York location. In 1995, only two branches of YIVO remained active (New York, Buenos Aires). The New York repository, however, remains one the foremost collections of Yiddish literature and documents in the world and continues to work toward the long term preservation of the language, tradition and history of the Jewish culture.
