The fonds also includes a film from the series Canada's History entitled Colony to Commonwealth.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Burt, Alfred LeRoy, 1888-1971 : Alfred Leroy Burt, history professor, was born in Listowel, Ont., and received his B.A. in History from the University of Toronto, 1910. He won the Rhodes Scholarship for Ontario and went to Oxford for a B.A., 1912, and M.A., 1916. He also won half of the Beit Prize for an essay on "Imperial Architects". In 1913, Burt began as a history lecturer at the University of Edmonton, became a full professor in 1920 and remained in that capacity until 1930, when he accepted a position of full professorial rank at the University of Minnesota, retiring in 1957.
He was a visiting professor at Carleton University, Ottawa 1957-1961, University of Chicago, 1958-1959 and University of Manitoba, 1960-1961. He received an honourary doctorate from the University of Alberta in May, 1966. His studies resulted in a revisionist version of Canadian history based on his extensive use of primary research in the Public Archives of Canada. Among the books and articles he wrote include the 'Old province of Quebec', 1933, 'The United States, Great Britain and British North America', 1940, and 'The British Empire and Commonwealth', 1956.
