Fonds consists of letters from Sir John A. Macdonald, one to Jas. O'Reilly and John Haggare, explaining that Peter McLaren cannot be appointed a Senator until all the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada have been appointed to the Senate, as stated in the Resolutions of Confederation, dated 10 April 1873, and the second to Mrs. McLaren stating that Sir John A. Macdonald will recommend Mr. McLaren be appointed a Senator, dated 6 Nov. 1889.

McLaren, Peter, 1833-1919 : Peter McLaren was born in Lanark, Upper Canada and became a merchant at Perth, with lumber interests in the North West Territories and lumber and iron interests in Virginia. He sat in the Senate, 1890-1919. See: Johnson, Directory of Parliament, p. 423.
