The fonds consists of the Kirk Session minute book of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church 1835-1845 (24 p.); and a photocopy of the register of marriages by John M. Roger, first Presbyterian Minister at Peterborough, Canada West [Ontario], 1834-1857 (60 p.).

St. Paul's Church (Peterborough, Ont. : Presbyterian) : The first minister of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Peterborough, was the Reverend John Morrice Roger (1807-1878), a graduate of Aberdeen University and licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons, London. He was one of six missionaries sent to the western part of Upper Canada in 1833 by the Church of Scotland's Glasgow Colonial Society. He accepted a call from Peterborough and, on 10 November 1833, was inducted into the charge, in which he remained until his retirement in 1876.

In 1834 the Prebystery of Kingston sanctioned the formation of a Kirk Session in the congregation, which at that time assembled partly in the town of Peterborough and partly in a church on the boundary line between the townships of Cavan and Monaghan. The first wooden church building was erected in 1834 at the corner of King and Aylmer Streets, Peterborough, and replaced by a stone structure in 1836. The present building at the corner of Murray and Water Streets, Peterborough, was begun in 1857 and completed in 1859.

In 1844, at the time of the disruption, Roger sided with the Free Kirk and withdrew from communion with the Church of Scotland. St. Paul's accordingly became part of the Presbyterian Church of Canada, of which Roger was elected moderator in 1847. In 1925, when the United Church of Canada was formed, St. Paul's elected not to join the union and its minister, the Reverend Robert Pogue (d. 1938), who supported it, was forced to resign. The 59th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church was held at St. Paul's in 1933, in honour of the congregation's centenary.

Custodial history:

The Kirk session minute book, 1835-1845, was received in 1920 and originally formed Part V, 5 of what then known as the Mitchell Miscellaneous Collection. The marriage register, 1834-1857, was received in 1971 from Mr. J. Alexander Edmison, Q.C., of Ottawa, Ont.. It was copied in 1970 from originals held by the Peterborough Centennial Museum. The entire fonds was microfilmed in 1987.
