Fonds consists of a copy of Dawson's monograph, the Voyages of the Cabots in 1497 and 1498, annotated; two letters from Baron Strathcona and Mont Royal in response to Dawson's request to dedicate his book Canada and Newfoundland to Strathcona; a letter from C. O'Brien, Archbishop of Halifax, to Dawson regarding a plan to erect a monument commemorating Cabot's (disputed) landing in Cape Breton; a letter from Sir John A. Macdonald regarding a Dawson manuscript for publication, photocopy, 1883, 1 page; and an article relating to the political history of the Canadian Parliament Buildings, appearing in the Carnival edition of the Montreal Daily News, February 1881, 10 pages.

Dawson, Samuel Edward, 1833-1916 : Samuel Dawson was born in 1833 at Halifax, N.S. He moved to Montreal with his family, 1847, where he started his business career in the family's bookselling and publishing firm, B. Dawson and Son, later Dawson Bros. In 1891 Dawson was appointed Queen's printer, a position he held until 1909. Dawson wrote on a variety of subjects ranging from Lord Tennyson's poetry to the early exploration of Canada. In recognition of his work he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1893 and was elected president of the society in 1907.
