Fonds consists of two letters from Sir John A. Macdonald, the first concerning the execution of James Whelan for the murder of Thomas D'Arcy McGee, dated 1869, and the other concerning appointment as Queen's Counsel, dated 1873.

O'Reilly, James, b. 1823 : James O'Reilly, born in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland in 1823, was a lawyer and politician. He married Mary Jane Redmond in November 1850.

O'Reilly came to Upper Canada in 1832 with his father, Peter O'Reilly, who settled in Belleville and there became a merchant before moving to Kingston in 1847. James began the study of law with C. O. Benson of Belleville. Called to the bar of Upper Canada in 1847, O'Reilly moved to Kingston. He was a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada, became a Queen's Council in 1864, and in 1870 was admitted to the bar of Quebec. O'Reilly participated in several spectacular criminal cases and, in 1868, successfully prosecuted the assassin of D'Arcy McGee. This trial revealed O'Reilly as an able, energetic attorney.

O'Reilly was also a religious man and his political career reflected this. He was President of the Kingston St. Patrick's Society and an important Catholic layman. His association with the bishop of Kingston and his law practice made him influential throughout eastern Ontario.
