Fonds consists of Alfred Kurlents' personal correspondence, 1949-1975, articles by him on Estonian folklore, 1973, 1976, articles, addresses in the Montreal Estonian Community Symposium, October 22-23, 1977; addresses, reports, correspondence, bulletins pertaining to the work of the Estonian National Council and to other Estonian organizations, 1952-1972, as well as clippings, booklets and other material collected by Alfred Kurlents on estonian community life. Also included is poetry, articles and other material pertaining to the litrary output of Merry Devergnas (born Marie-Eleanore Jurgenson), a poet and essayist of Estonian parentage born in Russia in 1912, who fled Estonia in 1944 and came to Canada in 1964. She wrote primarily in French and had her work published in both France and Quebec.

Fonds also contains sound recordings of interviews by historian Richard Ritsing with a number of Estonian Canadian citizens about their lives. Includes interviews with Helmut Piir, E. Ulk, Endel Ruberg, A. Saar, B. Reial, Captain Jaakson and Hekon Raudsepp (in Estonia), 1976.

Kurlents, Alfred, b. 1902-1990 : Alfred Kerlents, folklorist and historian, was born in 1902 in Valgamaa, Estonia. He received his Masters Degree in Estonian Folklore from Tartu University in 1931. He taught Estonia language and literature in High Schools of Tartu and Narva, until the outbreak of World War II interfered with his work as an educator. In 1944, he and his family fled Estonia to seek refuge in Sweden, from where they emigrated to Canada in 1949. After a short period of work as a designer with the Montreal Lithograph Company, he returned to university, to receive his degree in Library Science (1952) and his Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures (1962). While a student and while working as a librarian for the McGill University Medical Library, Kurlents was active as editor, writer and critic. Kurlents has written numerous articles for Estonian language newspapers. He has also prepared a short monograph on Karl rumor Ast, and Estonian writer and world traveller, and in 1962 became editor-in-chief of Estonians in Canada, volume I, an eight hundred page history on the Estonian community in this country, which was published in 1975.

Alfred Kerlents passed away in 1990.

General note:

Textual material received from Alfred Kurlents of Montreal in 1978. Sound recordings were acquired in 1978, and copied to PAC tapes 1459, 1460, and 1461. It appears that the originals were returned to donor.
