Fonds consists of letters from Sir John A. Macdonald to John Rankin, relating principally to the resignation of his seat in 1869 and his appointment as government agent at St. Paul, Minn., the following year, 1866-1886, 11 pages; commissions of Rankin as captain and ensign in the county Militia, 1870, 2 pages.

Rankin, John, 1820-ca. 1895 : John Rankin was born in New Glasgow, N.S. He was a merchant and hotel keeper in Cobden, Ont., Reeve of Ross Township, and warden of Renfrew County, 1865-1866. He was member for North Renfrew in the House of Commons and resigned in 1869 to provide a seat for Sir Francis Hincks. He was collector of customs at Bowmanville, Ont., 1870-1895.
