(David Lewis), 1818-1896 : David L. Macpherson, born in Scotland, came to Canada in 1835. He became a railway contractor and director of numerous companies, chiefly railways and banks. He was the author of several pamphlets on finance. He was a member of the Legislative Council of Canada, 1864-1867, and of the Senate, 1867-1896, serving as minister without portfolio, 1880-1883, minister of the Interior, 1883-1885. He was also speaker of the Senate, 1880.
