29 photographs b&w.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, manuscripts and printed material relating to literature and publishing in Canada, with particular reference to the publishing firm of William Collins Sons and Company, and relating to copyright in Canada.
The fonds also contains photographs of Quebec City, Quebec; Whycocomagh and Ingonish, Nova Scotia; Bay of Islands, Newfoundland; the steamships, Bonavista and Harlow; and a portrait of Frederick John Niven.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Appleton, Franklin F., 1893-1951 : Franklin F. Appleton, a Toronto publisher, was employed by the Musson Book Company and rose from assistant manager in 1912 to manager in 1916, becoming vice-president in 1920. In 1929, he joined George J. McLeod Ltd. as vice-president. In 1930, he organized the Canadian branch of the Scottish firm of Collins; he managed the firm of William Collins Sons and Company for 17 years. His first independant venture was Hugh MacLennan's "Barometer Rising" in 1941, followed in 1942 by Grace Campbell's "Thorn Apple Tree" and in 1943 by John D. Robin's "The Incomplete Angler".
He married Jennie Ross and together they had 4 children.Additional information:General note:Textual material and one photograph received in 1981.
