Fonds consists of an illustrated journal kept by British art critic Eric Newton during his 1937 lecture tour of Canada. It contains Newton's colourful commentaries commencing with his Atlantic crossing on the S.S. Washington and his experiences en route and a two-day stop-over in New York, followed by observations compiled during a cross-Canada lecture series on art. During the tour which was organized by the National Gallery of Canada, Newton travels by train, from January through to early March, first to Ottawa and then across the Prairies and on to Vancouver and Victoria. He journeys back across the northern route, stopping in major cities to lecture, and returns to Ottawa before setting off for the Maritime leg of his itinerary. The latter part of the journal recalls events during his return visit to New York City and eventual ocean voyage back to Plymouth.

The journal is illustrated by Newton's charming sketches and caricatures and contains one photograph of him at a dinner function. The critic alludes in the journal to Canadian art and society, the National Gallery of Canada and other cultural institutions where he lectured, the landscape, cities he visited and what he humourously observed as a national obsession with weather. Personalities mentioned include Eric Brown, Donald Buchanan, H.O. McCurry, Augustus Kenderdine, Avery Shaw, Jack Humphrey, Lilias Torrance Newton, Wilfrid Eggleston, and Frederick Varley.

Newton, Eric, 1893-1965 : Eric Newton, art critic and author, first worked as a mosaic designer and craftsman, after graduating from Manchester University. He became art critic for "The Manchester Guardian" and "The Sunday Times", and later was president of the British section of the Association Internationale des Critiques d'Art, 1949-1961. In 1937, 1953, and 1956, he gave lecture tours in Canada and the U.S.A. He was a member of the Carnegie Jury at Pittsburgh in 1952, Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University, 1959-1960, and Art Adviser for the Commonwealth Institute, from 1960 to 1963.

Among his publications were "The Artist and his Public", 1935, "European Painting and Sculpture", 1941, "The Arts of Man", 1960, and "The Romantic Rebellion", 1962.

The journal was received in 1978 from the National Archives London Office, which had already microfilmed the original in the possession of Stella Mary Newton of London, England in 1977.

Citation/reference note:

In 1997, John Stuart Batts published the diary through Mellen Publications. It is entitled 'The diary of English art critic Eric Newton on a North American lecture tour in 1937'.
